Presenter Biographies for April 10, 2009

Elliot Stern, Academic Superintendent
Elliot Stern is the Academic Superintendent for the K-8 & Middle Schools in the Boston Public Schools. Previously,Mr. Stern was the Principal of the Thomas Edison MIddle School for 19 years. During his tenure, he lead the faculty in a school improvement process that has resulted in increased student learning. He has been guided by the belief that by cultivating teacher leadership and fostering quality professional development, schools can drematically improve instruction and impact student performance. Mr. Stern is presently faciliating a leadership course from school-based administrators interested in exploring the principalship. In addition, he served as a "teacher on assignment" at the University of Massachusetts and worked on collaborative projects to support linguistic minority students in the Boston Public Schools. While at UMASS, he taught courses in bilingual education and designed the Talented and Gifted Program for Latino students. He began his teaching career at the Mary Curley Middle School and at English High School. Mr. Stern holds a bachelor's degree from Temple University and master's degrees from Boston University and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Carrie Maille Hickey, Assistant Academic Superintendent
Carrie Maille Hickey is the Assistant Academic Superintendent for the K-8 & Middle Schools in the Boston Public Schools. Previously, Dr. Hickey was the Instructional Leader for Triad B, where for the past three years she has supported principals and schools in a planning and improvement process that includes data analysis, reflection on current practices, the implmentation of high-leverage instructional priorities, and the assessment of progress through student performance. Dr. Hickey also served as the Executive Director of Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center, where she supervised a Middle School Academy for urban girls in grades 5-8, an adult education program, and an after-school program for elementary studetns. Prior to that, Dr. Hickey was the Princial of the former William Howard Taft Middle School in Brighton. She began her teaching career in the New York City Public Schools, and came to Boston in 1996 as an Arts Educator at the R.G. Shaw Middle School. Dr. Hickey holds a bachelor's degree from The Boston Conservatory, a master's degree from Teachers College, Columbia Universtiy, and a certificate of advanced graduate study and a doctorate from Harvard University.

Jeffrey Slater, Principal of the Curley K-8 School in Jamaica Plain
Jeffrey Slater is the principal of the Curley K-8 School in the Boston Public Schools. Previously, Mr. Slater was a middle school Academy Director at the Orchard Gardens K-8 Pilot School. Mr. Slater was a Boston Principal Fellow where he completed his internship at the Umana Middle School Academy in East Boston and also served as a middle school literacy coach at the Gavin and Lewenburg Middle Schools in the BPS. He began his teaching career at a middle school in the Harrisburg City School District in Pennsylvania. Throughout his teaching career, Mr. Slater also held various elected positions at the local, state, and national levels of the teachers' education associations. Mr. Slater holds a bachelor’s degree from Millersville University, a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix, and a master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts at Boston.
